Refine Method

Before I take a new class I like to stalk the studio’s website first to mentally prepare myself for what’s to come. This particular stalk session lasted much longer than I anticipated; The Refine Method website is so thorough in explaining what they do, why they do it and how it’s different than any other approach… I sat at my desk completely sucked in to the content and left wanting more. As someone who’s studied exercise, it’s a true delight to stumble upon a quality fitness company that understands the joint actions, muscle contractions and cardiorespiratory effects of exercise – and actually explains them to their customers. And no one can deny the credibility that comes with being a legitimate ballet dancer, which the Refine Method creator Brynn Jinnett is. Millions of girls dream of being a dancer – or at least to look like one – so if this method is what a real dancer does, count me in!

I do have to admit a tiny bit of fear going into the class after google-image searching the studio and finding page after page of straps that resemble medieval torture devices hanging from brick walls. Thankfully, the in-person version isn’t nearly as scary. The class instructor, Katie, showed me exactly which gadgets I’d need for the class including various sized kettle bells, a foam roller, an elastic band and of course, the straps. She set me up with the appropriate weights for my first class and explained the flow of the session and then we got started. The session was no joke. I sweat my bum off and huffed and puffed through the cardio bits, but never felt completely whipped or that I couldn’t complete a set. It was both challenging and invigorating and to my delight, the time flew by! Before I knew it it was time to dim the lights, slow the music and start the uber-calming 10-minute stretch session. Amazing.

If you’re in the area and looking for a killer circuit-style workout, Refine Method is the best! Constantly changing moves and body parts makes even the toughest exercise tolerable knowing you only have to pull it off for 30 seconds. I have to think circuit training is just as much a mind game as it is a muscle game… It’s far easier convincing yourself to doing something for only 30 seconds than it is for 60 seconds or (gasp!) longer. And if you have workout ADD like me, circuit training is your new best friend! Zero boredom, maximum results.

Overall score: 10 (seriously, best class I’ve ever taken)

Your trainer,

Jenny
